A ring isn't something worth going into debt for. If my bf couldn't afford something I'd be happy wearing, I'd just forego the engagement ring entirely. Maybe you could save up to get a nicer wedding ring.

This is a very American thing. I am from Europe and we just don't have that tradition. I lived in Manhattan and all my friends asked me about the ring. It was nice but I thought for 2 students way too much money. Tiffany .5 ct.

I wanted a ring that was in line with his income. Don't buy me a $300 ring then go spend $1000+ on your hobby. I also wanted him to pay in full-don't go into debt for an e-ring. I wanted to know he could set a financial goal and save towards it.

He couldn't afford a great setting and diamond. So I picked a great setting and CZ. Figured I could upgrade to a diamond later. But now I'd rather have a new kitchen and not worth spending $$ on a stone.

No. Because I cared more about the proposal than the ring and more about the marriage than the wedding.

A diamond is just about the worst thing you can throw your money away on.

Ive been engaged twice.

For my first engagement i was unhappy with the engagement ring - turned out i was unhappy with the engagement - i called it off.

For my second engagement, i loved my ring. I am happily married for 6 years now.

Its not the ring!

No, I never wear mine. My husband was going to get one but he was broke at the time. We used my great grandmothers. No big deal.

Yes you are being superficial. You can get a "nice" ring that isn't expensive, but it sounds like you want an expensive ring. The cost of an engagement ring does not equate to your worth to him. He can't afford it, which you should respect, or if it's that important to you talk to him about contributing to the purchase price.

If you get something less expensive now, it can always be replaced later if finances improve in the years to come. It's symbolic... doesn't have to be any certain way.

I don't care how much it costs, but I did care about the size and how it looks.

But if my bf told me he couldn't afford it, I would buy my own.

Is he supposed to rob a bank? How can he buy you something he can't afford?

Do you?

My bf told me he wants to propose to me but he cannot afford to get me an expensive one so he'll get me a cheap one for now. I'm kinda upset since I have told him how I want to always be wearing it and so I want it to be nice. Also it is annoying me that he thinks I'm not worth a more expensive ring.

Am I being superficial?
