We built a stand. Also, sometimes we use an over the door rack - the kind people use for clothes or towels.

In the houses we have lived in without fireplaces, we have hung stockings:
From the side of the stairs
from our breakfast bar ovelooking the family room
from a shelf
off the edge of a cabinet
on a wall

Off the foot of the bed. Full disclosure- this was DH tradition going up. We always put Oura as kids on the mantle.

Our fireplace is in our basement and we don't go down there much in the winter because it gets really cold. We keep our christmas tree upstairs in our living room (we're in a townhouse), but we don't have anywhere to hang stockings. How/where would you hang stockings if you don't have a mantel?
