We have this on our hardwood stairs and they can be taken off and replaced easily. Very affordable and looks much better than some of the other options.

Put in a low pile carpet in a neutral (brown) color. Cheaper, easier to clean, quieter, etc.

Treads can be installed yourself, prob not a runner. Runners look more polished, imo. Just pick something neutral - there are crazy patterns available

What's better for resale value, stair runner or stair treads? I have two young children and need to cover the wood stairs, but we are moving in a couple of years so I want to pick something that won't turn off potential buyers.
Does installing the carpet damage the wood stairs at all?
