On Modern Family, the Dunphy's have a couple of larger cabinets in white that mix with their other things and I always think how nice they look when I watch the show.

Yes mixing woods breaks it up - I dislike the "all Oak, all the time" look. In my colonial i have extensive wood floors, of course, PLUS all the trim is wood. So I added a blonde hutch and it goes, but it breaks it up. When we get a table, I think i'll go darker.
Yes on the white - either white or dark would go but white in the corner next to the kitchen is probably best.

I think it's most important that the furniture styles/lines complement each other. i.e., don't put a modern pine platform bed into a room with traditional cherry furniture. Assuming you're good there, I think it's fine to mix wood tones.

That won't be very noticeable. (If for some reason it looks terrible, get a bed skirt or longer bed cover.)

Mixing woods is very popular right now. I think variety is nice than matchy matchy. You might want to add one other pine accent piece to bring it all together and make it look more deliberate.
