No phones for kids at school. NO child needs a phone while at school. They can be reached there and if they need to reach you they can...there are teachers and an office for a reason. If you must give your kids a phone to school a rule can be to have it turned off and in their locker but honestly...that's not going to happen is it?

I don't know any kids who play games on their phones.

My HS senior has come across one or two teachers who actually seem to take phones away if they see them out during class (they hand them over to the security office and a parent has to pick the phone up). However, some teachers try to incorporate the technology into the classroom at this point, i.e., have the kids use the phones to do some research on the Internet or some other activity. I don't think kids can sit in class snapping selfies, but I'm sure a fair amount of messaging and texting happens.

I was in law school from 1998-2002 and many law students didn't have cell phones.

How many kids even had cell phones at that time? I was teaching sophomores during the late 90s/early 2000s, and I don't remember cell phones even being a problem.

Video games I think aren't much of a problem, but Instagram, Snapchat, texting, and web surfing are rife at our FCPS HS. A few teachers restrict it but most - and the admin - do nothing.

Hi, I am trying to learn more about how schools manage and/or control video game use during the school day once kids have their own phones and computers. I will be doing research directly with schools but would love parents' impressions as well. Thank you!
