But I'm pretty décor-y and I have a gallery wall in my house and love it and it looks great. Black frames, white mats, and b&w family photos. The photos are at the top of the stairs in our little rowhouse, and include lots of conversation pieces - so when people pass by they stop and are like "oh goes, this picture is awesome". Lots of retro pics of my parents in the 40s and 50s and 60s, grandparents looking awesome in the oughts. I think it still looks great and not dated in our house because of style is white/grey minimalist, so it blends in well and adds some family pop.
But if your friends with décor sense are telling you "no", it may be because your house is otherwise too old fashioned, and it will therefore create more of the pottery barn look.
ANd I just googled it, and it looks like gallery walls today are more inclined to have a lot more color and eclecticism - mismatched funky frames and the such.
This is what I have in my space. We have eclectic decor in a small-ish modem space, and I have a couple of gallery walls of art, some homemade, some bought, interspersed with photos, some of which are art pieces, and some of which are colorful family photos. I get frequent compliments.
