Wow, it doesn't seem worth giving up all the benefits of public school teaching (pension, health care, job security) to work for so much less pay than public teachers make.

I started at $40K with a masters + additional credits.

After 10 years I am at about $60K.

13 years experience, masters degree...80K plus a few thousand extra for extracurricular duties.

If you're a teacher in an independent school, can you share the salary range at your school (with a masters degree)? I'm thinking about returning to school for a 13 month program to earn my masters in teaching. After staying home with my kids for many years, I'm ready to return to work and don't want to return to my prior field.

I'm not interested in debating the merits of teaching. I volunteer several hours a week in our local elementary school and have friends who are teachers so I know there are pros and cons. I also know that MCPS pays better than most privates but would prefer to teach where there's more autonomy and less testing.
