Hahahahaha. So funny to read this, I'm Canadian and these have been standard technology for years. And no, the servers don't ask how much you want to tip. Either this server truly doesn't understand that it is up to the customer to add the tip on the machine, or there's a greedier motivation for asking you outright. Honestly, this is the kind of thing I'd phone the manager about. So rude.

I've only seen that overseas, on a recent trip to Peru. I've never had to do that here. Strange.

That's so strange, I've never seen that before. Makes me wonder what they're trying to address, maybe people not wanting their credit cards going out of their sight, or perhaps they had people disputing tip amounts after the fact.

it's such a turn off. don't know why the restaurant did this but the server brought over a handheld credit card reader along with the check, and asked how much would we like to tip, and she then punched in the number right there and handed us the receipt to sign. it just felt so awkward.
