All schools are allowed. Free education, it's a right. As for the kids being dumped it is not a obvious as before because the funds follow the child thanks to OSSE.

I think both Capitol Hill Montessori and Lee Montessori have taken kids after count day. Maybe all the Montessori's do dive the model is designed for a large class size.

We lucked out last year and got a PK3 spot at HD Cooke after count day -- we were IB though, so we were close to the top of the wait list.

A neighborhood listserv said Amidon-Bowen has 5 spots open now in their mixed PK3/4 class.

They do Tools of the Mind and families in the early childhood program, who are a pretty economically and racially diverse bunch, seem satisfied. The art and music teachers have won awards, there is a nice library, and the school is very transit-accessible and close to a lot of peoples' jobs. The school's test scores are low but increasing. Even people who decide not to stay for the testing years might like it for this year.

According to the listserv, call Ms. Cureton in the school's main office on Monday, October 5th, at (202) 724-4867 if you want to enroll your kid.

DCPS accepts after count day. But you have to be on the registrar if there are open spots to make sure they are offering htem. I had to talk to the principal of the school I was on the WL for when I found out there were 2 open spots last year, and then the registrar went down the waitlist. It was December, and we lucked out and got one of the spots.

Not sure about prek but in upper grades for sure.

Data or proof?

There are facts, but the data is old. The October Shuffle doesn't happen nearly as much as it used to 10 or so years ago.

Don't listen to this bitter PP. There are no facts to prove this theory.

It actually does apply differently based on grade. Some schools will fill an older grade (own they're not likely to fill the following year).

Pre-k 3, but I assume policy would apply to all grades, so that piece wouldn't matter so much.

I searched and saw two rivers, and one mention of Yu Ying.

Any others (interested in DCPS's too)?
