I'm aware that testing gifted in k is no indicator of future success, or giftedness. That's one reason we didn't put her in a gifted program at age five. She may or may not be. She's talented in some things, not in others--like all kids. Teachers have asked me if we've had her assessed... which is another reason I'm asking about this. Living in dc, it's hard to even get information about VA and MD systems. And pg county has its own gifted track too? Thanks, all. This has been very helpful.

Just of your kid takes WISC IV IQ test with a licensed psychologist. If the score is good (130+), then your kid should have a good chance admitted to AAP at FCPS.

Your child tested gifted in K. I have no idea what all the different IQ/aptitude tests are, but I'm thinking one size not fit all. Just because your child tested high in K, doesn't mean your child will test high on other tests by 3rd grade or beyond. There are no guarantees. I think you might be better of hedging your bets by staying in DC.

Having stated that, in MCPS, there are different MS magnets - one focused on STEM, and another focused on Language Arts. But, I think you probably have to live in MoCo to get a spot.

I have nothing against MD and VA--but I am a city person. But, like all of us, trying to weigh the options. We have a few years before middle school yet... Deal is a huge school, Latin and basis are lottery-only, and I'm trying to research options. The lower cost of housing in the more urban parts of Moco is also appealing.

Just remember in Arlington MS starts in 6th grade and in FCPS MS starts in 7th grade.

If you are looking for MS and above, it is a little too late for FCPS for the formal AAP program. However, it means you can enroll her in the high level classes without jumping through hoops. She can take all Honors for her core classes in MS and in HS she can take Honors and AP classes. The main thing is getting her into the correct math class. What math would she be taking in 7th grade in DC? WHen will she take Algebra or geometry?

On what basis did your child test into the gifted program? What tests were taken? What scores did he get? In Fairfax, there is no single exam a kid could take to get into the AAP program.

wow. You really believe there are NO schools in either of two states that would sufficiently educate your precious child? So, those of us who are using public schools in Md or Va are what???? Giving our children inferior, unacceptable educations? I think you're better off staying where you are.

If you really must leave DC, then have your kid tested before you move to Md or Va and then you will know if your kid is smart enough to get into one of the G/T or AAP programs. Honestly, though, I don't think you are going to like what is offered in Va. Your standards seem to be unrealistic.

In Maryland, you're admitted to the HGC for your cluster. If you don't have a cluster, I don't know how they'd place you. Each cluster has its own average scores, teachers, etc. You might call the office to see whether they'd let your child take the test.

You can take the exam for MCPS but I think you might have to already live in Moco in order to get a place in.

at Fairfax Ridge Building, 3877 Fairfax Ridge Road, Fairfax, VA 22030, according to the timeline. Proof of Fairfax
County residency is required at time of submission, as well as a $75 processing fee.
