Is telecommuting an option or do you require someone at this particular location.

That's how.

Dress it up a little -- I saw the job posting for x. My skills and experience are a strong match for the job, and I'm interested in applying. However, because I live in DC and unable to locate to wherever, I wanted to ask whether your would consider candidates who are able to work remotely rather than being located in wherever.

If you have the name of an HR person/hiring manager -- rather than just submitting on an online system -- why not ask, at worst they say no or ignore you. If you have the right experience and they haven't been able to find that locally, they may at least respond and say - send us your resume. I wouldn't bother if you are only able to submit through one of those online systems bc often they are programed to reject applicants based on a variety of fields -- and address might be one.

Disagree. If you really want it, you should apply.

Does not hurt to ask first! Why not?

I applied for a job that obviously should have been remote- it was in a remote location, they were advertising far and wide - nobody qualified for that job would ever live in that location - and I assumed it was remote. Quite wrongly - big waste of time. I would ask first.

I heard a rumor (and not from someone I really know- I can't go back and ask her) that a particular company hires a lot of people who are remote. A job popped up that would be great for me. Do I ask HR first if it's remote or not? I don't want to waste time (mine or theirs) but I also wonder I might be the sort of candidate they'd consider if they spoke to but might rule out otherwise...
