Not the PP, but perhaps if the kid were not overwhelmed with homework, s/he could have more family time, play sports or otherwise exercise, play an instrument, read a book for pleasure, etc., etc., etc.

5 or 6 subjects a night still doesn't tell us how heavy the load is. My child has 5 or 6 subjects a night and typically this is not a heavy load, despite her sport. I think we have had two nights that I felt it was a challenge to complete the work and still meet her usual bedtime.

Nor does "hours of homework" describe the load itself. Rather, it tells us how long it takes your DC to do the work. Another child may accomplish the tasks faster.

Can you actually describe the work? Such as...
1. ELA: Read a chapter independently.
2. Spelling: Study 10 words for tomorrow's quiz.
3. Math: Complete subtraction problems 1-26.
4. Social studies: Label a map of Maryland with all of the counties and their capital cities.
5. Science: Draw a diagram of a butterfly and label its body parts.

It is against PGCPS policy to take away playground time as punishment. If they are doing that, you should complain to the Principal and the school board.

My child goes to kingsford and the amount of homework is way too much. He is doing 5 or 6 subjects a night. This is too much for an elementary aged child. Sucks he is sitting doing classwork all day, then spending hours doing hw at home. Combine that with no field trips, and rarely playground time because one kid screws it up everyday for everyone and im pissed

This is our third year there. Its not so bad. It is an adjustment but once you figure out how to stay on top of it and "chunk" it- It doesn't seem that bad. Especially for projects you need to be disciplined about doing a little each night/each week - they usually give plenty of notice. I agree it can be unbearable if you try to do major assignments in one sitting.
