We save about 7k a month in 401k/IRA. if my wife wasn't part time taking care of our second kid we would put away another 3k or so.

Were you in the military?

Yes, but I was also able to qualify from my father back in the 90's.

What do you do now to be able to save so much?

Not sure what all of it adds up to with travel, etc., but:

mortgage: $6k
utilities: about $800
insurance, fixed costs, etc: $250
childcare: $1700 (about to go up to $3k)
groceries and household items: $600

We use Mint.com. The goal is to spend $8500 total a month, but something extra always seems to come up.

We spend about $4k to $6k per month. Mortgage is paid off, childcare is limited to a p/t sitter.

We invest about $6k per month.

About $8000 fixed - meaning mortgage, childcare (those 2 are about half), students loans, car loan, utilities, food. Depressing.

What's your average total monthly expense including mortgage, childcare, travel, insurances, food, etc.
I averaged out mine for the year and it's about 10k with childcare and mortgage taking up a little more than half.
