I'm also interested in price estimated for replacing stairs to basement. For us, we'd definitely have to to ripe old ones out entirely and start new. One carpenter told us we could have the whole thing made off site and it would be cheaper and less invasive, but I don't know the numbers.

When my wife and I bought our townhouse, it had two flights of 6-8 stairs leading from the front door-- one down, one up. The "down" stairs were carpeted. The "up" stairs were covered with a very dark hickory wood that matched the flooring on the upstairs floor. We didn't really like the existing wood and wanted both flights of stairs to match. We were able to get both flights covered with hardwood (light oak) for about $1K per flight, including ripping up the existing carpet/wood. The wood was prefinished, but we were OK with the end product. This was from the Carpetland retailer in Alexandria. Of course, this would work best if your stairs are very even because the wood wasn't sanded down and finished on-site.

Are you just looking to replace the flooring or the entire structure of the stairs?

The second post kind of sounds like it is only referring to flooring.

I'd have to look back and check but I think even for just flooring the stairs were the most expensive part to get done when getting floors done.

Even replacing the treads requires tools and some level of skill.

Do you mean just replacing the treads? Or the stringers as well (that's the zigzag support piece which supports the whole staircase). If it's just the treads, you can buy those at Home Depot, have them cut to size, and replace and finish them yourselves. If it's the whole shebang, a good handyman or carpenter.

Are they enclosed stairs OP?

If so, that will be a very big job.

+1. Hanging stairs requires a fairly high degree of skill. Not a job for a hack.

Has anyone had their stairs replaced (removed and new ones installed?) how much does it cost to do this and what company sells the stairs / does the install? Thinking about replacing basement stairs 8-10 steps)
