I'm the poster above that recommended the fridigaire one. It has an ice maker, but not indoor/water dispenser. I don't feel like the ice maker takes up all that much space in the freezer - and realistically, you'd always want a couple of ice trays even if you didn't have an ice maker. I don't think the frididaire ice maker is much bigger than that.

Can you have an extra refrigerator/freezer in the basement? Because counter-depth does not hold that much. That said, I love my Kenmore Elite we got a year and a half ago.

We got a GE counter depth one last summer and I adore it. It has french doors and the drawer freezer on the bottom. I had a terrible old fridge before, so anything would have been an improvement, but I think this one is great and I swear I can fit anything I want to in there.

We had a SubZero counter depth fridge, no water/ice dispenser, though it had an ice-maker. We hated the fridge as it didnt give us much space. The seal of the fridge was so good that we had to exert lots of strength to pull open the doors. Though the fridge kept food cold, it didnt keep the fridge dry. As a result, we constantly had mold issue. We did not have other issues with the fridge. The first chance we had, we swapped out the fridge with a KitchenAid, regular depth with ice/water dispenser. Has been 2 years, so far so good.

I have a Samsung counter depth french door bottom freezer w/ ice and water in the door. I like it. No problems. Yes, you definitely give up space with a counter depth, but on the plus side everything is very accessible. I feel like I only have room for the good things, and no longer lose weeks old leftovers in the way back. There is no way back anymore.

We have a Viking extra tall counter-depth with the freezer on the bottom and single door refrigerator. No water, but ice is in the freezer.

I love the refrigerator for a lot of its cool features, but it is SO much smaller (especially the freezer) than my last refrigerator, which was a completely standard, freezer on the top, model.

Sigh.

We are going to put an extra refrigerator in the garage because this one is just too small for our growing family.

If you want water and ice in the door, you will lose a lot of storage space. I agree to look at them-some brands are much smarter about how they placed the ice makers to take up less room.

We ended up skipping the in door ice maker for space concerns. Haven't missed it at all. It's really not that hard to open the freezer for ice.

We bought it a couple years ago when we were renovating a space and were stuck with a height limit, and we loved it. We have moved recently and are re doing our kitchen and chose this one again without pause. It feels as big as a regular fridge, the shelves and drawers all work, and it just works well. Price is also great compared to other CD models. We didn't get the ice maker - which was a purposeful decision for us because they always break so easily. So I guess that freed up a lot of room in the fridge. But this model comes in a built in ice maker version too, if you're insistent. In any event, I highly recommend this one.

The higher end brands are taller and can hold more. They should also last longer, but are significantly more expensive. Nothing is made to last these days, it's simply not profitable in today's market of greed.

My advice would be - and it sounds like you have done this? - actually visit showrooms to see the options. When we moved, I just ordered the counter-depth version of the GE Profile fridge we had in our previous place. When I had to actually use it/stock it with groceries I was so surprised at how much space we lost. Shortly thereafter I went fridge shopping with my mom and we were in a few brick and mortar stores. I opened up all the fridges and could definitely see that other brands were making better use of the space. Someone - I want to say Electrolux??? - put the ice maker equipment and maybe also the water filter in the door of the freezer which freed up a lot of interior space. So weigh this with reviews.

So we need to get a counter depth fridge because our cabinets aren't very deep. We've been looking into various brands/models but can't find a clear winner. We'd like a french door w/ freezer on bottom model and prefer to have the water and ice in the door since we have kids. I saw that Samsung and LG are recommended by Consumuer Reports but we've gotten burned following their suggestions before. We'd also like for it to have as big a capacity as possible, which is tough w/ counter depth, and have a good track history on maintenance repairs. I've heard Samsung and LG tend to have problems and that they can be hard to find people to repair them. We want to make a good choice but just moved into a new house this week and are using a college door sized fridge for a family of four. TIA!
