Subject: have you tried the one-coat paints?
OP here-- husband is really pleased and surprised with the paint. It really did cover in one coat. One caveat--- he also did lots of prep work, including filling in divots, and sanding down bumps and high spots. We also did a very careful priming job. Maybe ours isn't officially a good test for the one-coat promise, as we primed. My husband is exacting about this kind of stuff-- always primes, always uses two coats. So he's pretty excited that we tried this paint, as it lets him apply only one coat after the primer. I've read reviews that where people thought the paint was too thick but we thought it was fine.

I guess this is after the fact, but I always use two coats. I find the first one is never perfect, and the second evens it out. I remember going to BM to buy one coat Aura ($$$); the salesperson said I wouldn't be happy with one coat for the aforementioned reasons. I got the less expensive Regal instead. I suspect that one coat paints are great for contractors, less so for the average homeowner.

Thanks, guys! We are trying the Behr Marquee today. One room in a medium tan/brown, the other in a lightish turquoise. Will report back tonight!

It covered dark burgundy walls to pale greenish taupe in a coat plus touch ups and to white in two coats.
The coverage is nice and it doesn t drip like other paints.
+1 for Behr paint with primer. It did take two coats but the coverage is excellent and so is the price.

I used Benjamin Moore Regal. I don't think it claims to be a one-coat paint, but I was really impressed with it. It covered school-bus-yellow walls with one coat of light tan paint.

We're considering using one of the paints that claims to cover in one coat... no primer, no 2nd coat. What do we think about that? Have we tried it? Do we like it? Sounds a bit too good to be true. I'd like the hear the voice(s) of experience on this one! Thanks.
