How much water do people actually get in their basements that it impacts flooring choices? I always read that basement flooring should be able to handle water, but we haven't ever had water in our basement, neither have my parents who have been in the same house for 30 years.

We can't add underflow heating as it will add another $15K or more and we are already over budget.
Should I just go with tile and hope for the best? I love the tile look. Will it be too noisy with several boys playing down there?

We have tile & I love it. I never worry about water, & it was especially appreciated when the washer overflowed. No damage whatsoever. It is not too cold (although I am not playing on the floor). I'm sure a rug would be fine. Oh, it might not feel cold to me bec we chose tile w/ warm brown tones. I imagine a white marble would feel really icy.

I picked up a few samples of cork flooring last weekend because I love the look, but after realizing that simply pressing on it with my fingernail leaves a permenant mark, I would never consider it a flooring option.

It will feel like ICE! Your builder is right.

We have a laminate tile in our basement and it is cool in summer and too cold to walk on in winter!

We just installed faux wood planks in our family room AND kitchen. Love it. Look up/research brand coretec, specifically luxury vinyl plank flooring. Looks like reclaimed wood. Next up, this will go in our basement. Currently have wall to wall carpet there.

The builder is not the decision maker. Get what you want. I wouldn't get wall to wall carpet either.
