OP here, I agree but I'll be damned if I put hardwood in there given that it's the kids room. Last time we had their friends over they tried to take a selfie on the coffee table and broke it beyond repair.

We have 20 year old Berber in our high-traffic family room and it still looks good. No snags or runs and stains don't show. I wish I knew what brand it was but it's good stuff, whatever it is.

Whatever you get, don’t get berber. We used it in a family room that got lots of wear - recommendation of a friend. It snags, runs, and generally does not wear well.

It's wall to wall right now and the carpet is probably original to the house - it's gold like everything was in 1998. I'm getting rid of the Tuscan colors (so much gold and olive!) and going traditional- doing the whole house greige and grey.

What's in the room now? If it isn't already wall to wall, don't do it.

7 years is a long time for heavy use on a carpet -- pick what you want for now and plan to replace it (or offer credit) when it's time to sell.

Dont put in what is popular now if you don't want it to look dated. Just get the average run of the mill low pile carpet in a neutral color.

Really not a fan but it's for the upstairs family room which is primarily used by the teenagers so it has to be tough, stain resistant and not a huge investment. What kind of carpet is popular now? I see everything from shag to sisal. We'll resell in 7 years so I don't want it to look dated then.
