I was there OP. My HS just wasn't the right place for me. I ended up transferring junior year. Don't rule that out of it's an option for you.

Lots of good advice here. My son is a introvert and doesn't mind being alone but has met a lot of other kids who eat alone. Also joined a couple clubs and I'm shocked how many kids he's met just like him.

Theater kids tend to be among the most welcoming group in high school. Can they try out for or volunteer to help with the play?

Not sure what year DC is, but if they're almost done with HS, remember that college is often a WHOLE different story. For me high school was small minded and cliquey and often mean. College was where I found my people.

Good luck!

Encourage him or her to reach out to other similar kids. Do you have any parent friends in the school or know any other kids who can take him or her under his or her wing? All it takes is one friend to turn it all around. Hugs to you and your DC.. that is a tough situation but can turn around so fast!

Join something where the kids are nice. Stage Crew, the no cut winter sport, or the literary magazine. Then join something like USY or whatever group is appropriate to at least get some friends outside of school.

Hey grammar nazi, OP is not wanting to reveal the gender of his/her child. Stop being a noodge.

Does DC play a sport? I find for my kids, who play several sports, many of the friends at school developed from playing on the teams.

Have him look for someone else who eats alone.

Lots of hugs, read lots of novels, watch coming of age movies - life does and will get better - make sure DC knows this is temporary. Also, look for outside clubs and activities - church, drama, volunteering, etc. Make school a less important part of his/her day and his/her life. Stay engaged, OP. Do not let a day go by when you or another loving caregiver is there for your DC. Help him/her build a life that is much larger than HS.
