Maybe they like him and are trying to get his attention.

my experience with sixth grade girls is that anything relating to boys is "eww" nothing more complicated than that. My oldest boy is in 7th grade and he tells me all the time that the girls tell the boys they are "gross". Non-issue since most boys still see the girls as annoying, giggly, talk too much etc.

Some kids are annoying. I agree with PP who advised to look at this as an opportunity. First, I'd make sure he's wearing deodorant. If this is after PE, it could be about something real and simple. If that is not an issue, humor may be an appropriate response. Role play until he finds a response that seems to fit. He could confront and say something, like "what makes you two so mean?" Or have him prepared to make are really "eww" inspiring face next time he comes in. Or tell him to fist pump to celebrate their "ewws" (sending the message that you don't find me cool . . so glad)

Yes, girls in my high school classes do this. I feel especially embarrassed for one girl who has repeats a line from Mean Girls, and then repeats the same line several more times if no one laughs or acknowledges her wit. She doesn't seem to realize that Mean Girls and Clueless are very recognizable.

Stop trying to make 'fetch' happen. It's not going to happen.

It's hard to watch your kids get treated poorly by mean girls (or boys), but in the end, it is a really good life lesson in developing self-esteem, standing up for yourself and knowing how a true friend acts.

I have a theory, from watching some stuff happen with my daughter and her friends (and her "friends") that sometimes mean girls are the ones who are starved for parental attention. They have lots of emotional intelligence, but are using it for evil instead of good. As if they got really good at testing their mom's and dad's psyches during their cries for attention at home, and now they are turning their skills onto the mass populace. But that could just be my sampling error. :/

Poor parenting. Mom and dad are probably goons.

I swear there were mean girls in my kid's Kindergarten class last year.

My son had this kind of thing happen in 6th grade too. In 8th, he's now better equipt to call them out.

Girls this age have been doing this mean stuff for a lot longer than Mean Girls has been around.

Usually kids who watch too many movies and get their ideas from that.
