I think IKEA has higher standards than the norm here in the US.

I think West Elm and Ikea have some selection of flame retardent free stuff. Mitchell Gold and Room and Board are also starting to offer more options. I agree with you OP. that stuff is absolutely toxic. I would never ever let my kid sleep in or on that crap if I can help it. I think more parents need to educate themselves-start with "Toxic Hot Seat" you will be enraged at the forces behind the push for flame retardants. You will also wonder about the links to that stuff and cancer, autism etc...And even more concern at the level of that stuff they find in breastmilk.

Hard to get anything without flame retardant, Target or otherwise.

I'm looking for a pair of storage ottomans for our living room. I was tempted by a recent Target home sale, as these will be used primarily for my son's toys, wrestling 4 year old boys, and -- when not in use by kids -- will likely have cats or a dog on them so I don't want to spend too much money.

However, I started worrying about flame retardants, etc.

Where do people buy semi-decent (i.e., looks ok but is not actually expensive / I won't get upset when it gets trashed) furniture that is not toxic?
