It is a girl's name, one step above Rue, as far as garden-type names go. Don't use it.

Sorry, OP. I think of Brer Rabbit and Sweet Briar College.

I've never heard of it as a name for a boy or a girl. I'm sure it's been used by someone somewhere, but I would consider it similar to naming my kid Fence or Garden.

That's a great bunny name. But a girl bunny.

I do calligraphy and read Briar as Brian. After all, it is an incomplete pen stroke away from Brian.

Aside from relating it to a bear, fox, or rabbit, I also thought of Friar Tuck in Robin Hood.
This thread makes me want to ride Splash Mountain.

I would not name my child Briar because it is a thorny weed that is snarly and painful.

Briar is also apparently a racist slur for white people.

Sleeping Beauty is Briar Rose.

Please don't name your kid Briar. That's really terrible.

Oh please Brer Fox, whatever you do, please don't throw me into the briar patch

Still not a name.

Shut up. It is now being used as a name. It's unisex.
