1) I wouldn't trust an architect to be a kitchen expert

Subject: Cost for architect to design kitchen?
We are considering buying a house that needs a pretty major redesign on the kitchen. There's a lot of room, but every wall has a window or door - making the placement of useful counter space impossible. We're pretty creative, but can't come up with the right solution and would prefer to hire an architect to do the work.
Does anyone have a rough idea of how much it would cost to hire an architect to do this? I think I've usually heard it as about 10% of a project - so should I expect it to be 5-6k?
