PP here - also I used the list of tutors from The Lab School (posted on their website). It's a good long list, so a nice place to start.

I do think another PP saying you get what you pay for is probably right - I wanted someone with specific experience in the issues and the ability to teach specific strategies.

Another option might be talking with the teachers and specialists at your child's school. I would not be surprised if they were slightly cheaper.

I called around for a special needs (recently identified math disability with ADHD and exec processing issues, upper elementary) this summer and $75 was the lowest I found. The range was $75 - $125. And most suggested meeting at least twice a week.

Most of them wanted me to drive to them, sometimes quite far. The $75 one luckily also ended up the most convenient, wanting to meet at a local library that was only a 10 minute drive away.

8:54 here - forgot to add that you get what you pay for. That doesn't mean that just because she charges $75 per hour that she is a skilled tutor, but I can for sure tell you that anyone who charges a "bargain price" is likely not skilled in teaching struggling students.

Also, when you're talking about a difference of $10 per hour between one tutor or another - that is a literal drop in the bucket and not worth stressing over. It will be money well-spent if you find the right tutor for your kid.

$85 per hour. she works with DS on math and reading and specializes in working with children who struggle with ADHD, LDs, Executive Function. She also attends our IEP meetings with us.

The least I have ever paid for a specialized tutor in this area is $75 per hour.

Quoted $100 an hour for a very experienced learning support teacher in Bethesda for 3rd grade.

Pay $80 for my son's math tutor. He's excellent and worth every penny. I would not expect a professional teacher to work for much less than that.

We are in McLean and from 2nd grade through 7th grade we paid $60 per hour for DC's reading tutor (2-3 times a week). He is now in 11th grade. She was a reading specialist at a different ES and I drove DC there, she did not come to us. I would think the cost would be more today. It was not out of line then and I knew people who paid more for others at the time. $75 is reasonable.
