I paid roughly 1k for each. Now if she plans to go into heavy duty editing, photoshop, etc...get a macbook pro.

I'm a graphic designer. Have a macbook pro and a HP EliteBook Folio 1040 G2 Notebook PC. Much prefer the PC. Loathe working on the macbook.

Which one would you recommend? How much should I spend? I'm hoping this purchase would last through her college years.
I prefer Macs to Dells for several reasons. Macs hold up better. Dells die after a few years. Keys fall off, hard drive drives or just gets too sluggish to keep up with technology, etc.

Macs have more to offer if you are into multimedia. Kids these days are into YouTube and other media and macs are great for video editing, music, etc. Well worth the investment in my opinion. Also if the kid has an iPhone then the mac makes the most sense.
And no it won't last through college but will get her through High School. She will want to get a newer faster model in college.

My kids all love their Macbook Air laptops.

whatever you buy won't last through college. I am fairly certain about that. The machine might not die, but it won't have enough ram for normal work, whatever normal work is five years from now.

I would recommend a $500 pc from micro center (as the above poster suggested). Plenty good enough for a kid.

As for macbook air: My son has the one supplied by Arlington county and couldn't handle the assignments he had at the end of the term. Crashed multiple times and really couldn't handle photoshop or iMovie, both of which he needed for class.

lol..that was a 11" for the 15 year old, and a 13" for the 17 year old.

Go to Microcenter. For $500 you can get an incredibly fast light laptop, that will do what she will need it for. She needs Word, access to the internet and maybe excel. That's it. I would never spend a $1000 on a computer for an 11 yr old.

In a few years, you will need to buy her a better machine for college when it will get more use than typing an surfing the internet
Kids are tough on machines and I would be really upset if I has to replace a $1000 machine.

Macbook if you have the money to burn other than that a PC is perfectly fine for your kids.
