The music teacher at our school changes her hair color every week! I think education is more relaxed than other areas. I do think overly-hair (braided or not) can look unprofessional and/or a bit silly if it isn't pulled back/up.

That is great that you are open minded but when you are an African American Female.. you have to think about hairstyles, dress etc.. even in 2015 we have to work harder. Your pony-tail is straight and following... like the American dream.

I just don't get why some people think braids, twists, etc are not professional. As long as it's neat and not ratty, who cares? One of my colleagues changes her hair style every few weeks. It's gone from braids of various kinds (I don't know the names), to relaxed, to short springy curls, to some giant medusa-like thing. She looked great in all of them and even if she didn't, whatever. Elementary School...semi conservative... lots of sitting on the floor getting down to their level. And why wouldn't you do it?
I've worked in fairly conservative cultures and client facing roles and I wouldnt want my hair to make people think too much: how does she do that? How long did it take? Can she wash it? Is it real? Etc etc. I know how this sounds, but I've heard people say similar things about other colleagues and I wouldn't want my hair to be a focal point.
FWIW, I do wear my hair curly much more often than straight.
