I've had an oreck for about 7 years and it's still working perfectly. Zero problems with it.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my red Riccar Supralite upright vacuum. While it doesn't have tools, it's only 9lbs, has a STEEL agitator with replaceable brush strips and it takes bags! Hated emptying my Dyson DC65 - seemed like the dust bin really held on to the dog hair. I use the Riccar on wall-to-wall carpeting and area rugs with ease...it really takes off on it's own but is fairly easy to maneuver. I can agree with pp that Miele canisters are AWESOME! I had a Miele Twist from Bed, Bath, and Beyond but found it clunky so I returned it. My Miele canister is about 15 years old and still works flawlessly.

I love, love my Miele canister but have heard only mediocre reviews about their upright vacs. My second vacuum is actually a cheapo Panasonic that cost under $100 and if you are good about changing out the filters, that thing is a workhorse. I've had it for 10 years, and every time it loses power/doesn't work as well as it used to, we just switch out the filters and it starts working like brand new. I had very specific reasons for needing a canister, otherwise I would've kept going with the Panasonic.

1523 here. That is really funny. I did the exact opposite and switched from the Miele Cat & Dog canister to the Miele Twist upright! I found the canister more difficult to work with for the same reasons you mentioned as advantages. I didn't like that the canister followed behind a short hose and there was so much pulling. Maybe I didn't give it enough time, or it was habit of uprights, but I fell in love with the Miele upright once I used it. The two performed similarly, though I did invest in an extension kit to use. I will say that most every site will suggest a canister as the superior type of cleaner though. I just couldn't get used to it.

Hoover elite upright from Sears. According to Consumer Reports it has the best suction. It is heavy though. I use a cheaper small shark vacuum on my front and back stairs.

PP again. I found out about Miele from DCUM a while back. Finally I decided to try it. Do a DCUM search on Miele and you will see nothing but good reports about it when people ask for vacuum recommendations.

I bought a Shark vacuum at Macy's. It works well and picks up dirt better than my previous vacuum.

The blue one (I think it is the Twist) is the best with the most features for $.

Works great on hardwood, carpet, attachments and hose length are awesome - buy it at Bed Bath & Beyond, save your receipt and if there is ever an issue you can exchange it, though the Miele store in Tysons is great too.

Shark, Dyson, Hoover - none compare.

Dyson is the worst, a total scam. Sharks are trash. Comparing a shark and a Dyson is just comparing the two best marketed vaccums. Get a real, solid brand that won't be as well known.

we have the SharkPro. I dont mind it, and it was $150ish after BBB coupon.

in retrospect - the cheaper vacuums are just as fine and I would just buy a $50 vacuum, use till it breaks and then buy a new one. friends of ours who bought dyson find them heavy/clunky and don't work as well over time though they are $$$

Search iama vacuum on Google - read the threads on reddit. IiRC he recommended Riccar for upright. Bags are the bomb, I regret all the years I went bagless. So much cleaner and they are super easy to change and get refills now with Amazon.
