Why is carpet on the stairs better for kids? We have a carpet runner on the stairs in our house and it seems a lot more slippery than the wood we had in our last house. I've fallen at least twice myself.

I think it's fine as long as the carpet color is neutral and goes with the wood (cream or beige). If it's green or red then dump it.

nah - the fact that he still made money off of you and didn't have to do the PIA part of doing wood on the stairs is the impotant part here. It's fine I'm sure, and safer for the kids, but a runner looks better. Period.

We were told by our floor guy to keep the carpet on the stairs, at least until the kids are older. And the fact that he could have made money off of us by removing it makes me trust him. We have wood floors everywhere else.

Maybe when the kids are older we'll do wood stairs with a runner.

We only have carpet on our stairs. However, the stairs are completely closed off -- it's an old cape cod and there is a door at the entrance to the stairs. I considered stripping the carpet and finishing the stairs but DH was concerned about them being slippery. If it was an open staircase I wouldn't like the carpet and would have pushed for wood + a runner.

If stretch and laminate the stairs and if you need carpet, add a runner. It'll look ridiculous otherwise.
