A good science and arts magazine for kids that age is Muse (from Cricketmedia). They have real articles, and go reasonably in depth with their subjects.

Do NOT give subscriptions to Kids Nat Geo, it's a rag fit for the trash. My 10 year old has read the real Nat Geo for a few years now. The Kids version is very sound-bitey and unprofessional - more targeted for early elementary, but I wouldn't even buy it for that age group, I would buy Ask.

Cricket Media also has literary mags for different age groups. They are an altogether stellar group.

I don't think you need to be compelled to have many physical gifts. I think gifts of experience are great--a class for example. If he likes electronics, there are classes on programming, robotics etc. that he might really enjoy.

My kid enjoys seeing plays and isn't so much into sports so we channel money towards that. Or going to a restaurant, waterpark, or movie with a friend. Some kind of special outing.

My kid likes stuff related to electronics too - he loves this skylanders tshirt, his minecraft characters, and books about pokemon. He loves pokemon and has for ages - thats a good thing for boys that isn't electronics if you can get him into it..

OP here. Electronics, but I don't want to keep encouraging it. He's got a lot as it is.

My DS is starting to outgrow "toys", legos, and what not. He seems to just like electronics. What else other than an electronic item can I get him as a gift? He does love books, and he has a kindle already, and yes, we buy him books. We've also just given him cash. He's not that into sports, but we do have a basketball hoop in the yard.

Anything else? It was so much easier when he was 5.
