Not worth repairing a unit that old as if it fails you still have to replace and lose the repair. We were in that situation and we ended up replacing. Got a Lennox and love it.

I live in a 1200 sq ft condo. The HVAC unit is about 12-13 yrs old. We get it serviced once or twice a year. Last year we spent $800 to replace a broken motor.

The A/C has been failing to pump cool air off and on for a few weeks. When I turn the air on, it works for a little bit but then it starts to make a low humming sound and although the air continues to blow it's no longer cold. When I turn off the unit for an hour and then turn it back on the Air comes out cold for aWhile but then the humming starts and out comes warm air.

I had the A/C company come out to inspect and they suggested that the coil was dirty and needed to be cleaned. Had another company come out and they said that the valves in the compressor and the compressor itself had both failed. They said it would cost about $2000 to purchase and install a new compressor. It would cost $5800 to purchase and install a brand new HVAC.

I'm going to get a third opinion but in the event that the third guy says it's the compressor what would you do:

Replace the compressor replace the entire unit? We are thinking of moving in the next year and DH doesn't want to spend anymore than we have to because he doesn't think we will get a good return on the investment. I, on the other hand, feel that if the compressor has in fact failed then we should just replace the entire unit. I don't want to keep having to repair it year after year.

TIA!
