OP, If your son was high functioning enough to have tried out aftercare last year would a high school babysitter work? Their bell times are earlier so there are usually tons available and some may be eager to learn about special needs.

Have you tried speaking to the school aftercare? They should be able to provide some accommodation. Our school hires extra staff to help out kids who may need more help.

Speak with the aftercare director to see what they can do. The worse they can say is "no" and you'll be in the same exact position you are in now.

I have a six year old son, high functioning ASD, and we need after school care. Basically someone to pick him up from the bus and care for him from 3:30 until around 5:30 or 6 pm when my husband or I come back from work. We tried the after care at his school last fall and this was unsuccessful as he needs more structure than they can provide. We ended up finding a one-on-one last year who was great but she can not continue as she is looking to get a degree working with SN kids. We are working through the same group who helped place us with her but we are a week and a half away from the start of school and they have not found anyone. Recommendations of groups/organizations that could help find someone with the skills need to care and work with our son, to include also working with him on speech therapy exercise as a follow on to his SLP work and socializing with peers, would be great.
