For an education on the different types of tile, go to the tile shop and talk to an employee. For tubs and other stuff like fixtures goes to ferguson kitchen and bath.

Look at the price tags for all that stuff and be realistic about what you plan to spend. We just finished our master bath, total gut job, and spent $32k. No tub but a really nice shower. Marble tile, lots of wood trim, glass shower doors, vanity... And at $32k I still couldn't fit in the Robern medicine cabinet I wanted.

Everything will come out and be replaced, but nothing is being moved around. New tile, toilet, shower, tub, vanity, lights, mirror. Basically, getting rid of the building-grade ugly/cheap stuff. Be gone, 4 inch white tiles! Adios, chorus line lights!

What is your experience level?

Do you actually own/use tools or is your experience watching hgtv?

This is the best response ever and I think you should use it on just about every thread here!!! Everyone seems to think they're a DIY weekend warrior even though they haven't left the couch.

Oh, lol.

Your posts made it seem like you were just going to pick up a sledgehammer and start knocking out walls based off a dcum checklist

We are in the midst of what started as a minor cosmetic update and turned into a complete gut job. We have a handyman doing the work, so we are still around $3000 (started at $1800) but watch out for spiraling costs. Also make sure to consider the cost of the little things like vent fan, light fixtures, new toilet, storage, tile, etc...

Do you have any familiarity with home plumbing/etc? Some counties offers DIY classes for homeowners in different topics. I'd say they're well worth their reasonable cost, and usually offered on the weekends.

If you've never lifted a hammer an entire bathroom renovation is a pretty large undertaking but doable if you take your time. You can also visit the diychatroom forum and just read and read there.

Anyone have a book to recommend? Any other advice would also be appreciated.
