We do this too. Our dog will take anything within muzzle reach on the counter. She has trained me not to leave things there.

We had a counter surfer. He never did it when we were home. 16 years... And we trained him to not do it when we we were home.

We watched him through a window one night, going along the counter on two hind feet, searching for the good stuff.


He was a smart guy, and always sought the reward. Gosh, I miss him

Key : if you cannot train the people (who are supposed to be so smart) to not leave stuff out of reach, don't figure you can train the dog to not look for it.

You might need a trainer in your home. There are some youtube training videos. In our training classes we learnt how to teach our dogs - off, leave it, take it. Take it is the only command for them to eat ever. It was extremely successful with our first, but not the dog we have now. Just last night she gobbled up a corn cob from the garbage in a split second. She vomited this morning. Now I have to watch her and decide if she needs a vet visit. All our garbage cans have lids and I can't leave anything out anywhere - very difficult with a family to keep track of everything. This one also will eat dirty socks, etc. so hampers are all closed too.

The first dog learnt so well! My kids would leave a hotdog or something on the counter for hours and she didn't ever take it. She was bad at holiday time though with extra food out and if we were busy. They were both lab mixes and that's part of the breed unfortunately. Dogs are scavengers and it's part of their DNA. Best to work on it while your dog is still young - Good luck!!

My son had cats that loved bread.

Recently bought this Rubbermaid bread container.

Dogs will be dogs. Get a breadbox with a latch.

How do I train the counter surfing behavior out of this dog? Obviously we try to put food up most of the time, but I can't have him jumping up if I have to step out of the room for a minute while making dinner. I had dogs growing up but they were sled-dog types and always kept their front legs on the ground, so this type of jumpy behavior is new to me.
