Really love our wool area rug from Pottery Barn.

Our crappy "oriental-style" rug that was more than 15 years old was wearing bare in places and my toddler was kneeling on one of the bare areas one day where the backing was starting to show through. Broke out in hives all over – we believe it was a latex sensitivity either from the glue or the material in the backing. Rolled the rug up that day and threw it out, and three hours later had the wool rug from Pottery Barn. They are not treated with nasty chemicals, came with an excellent warranty, and when we told the salesman about our hives experience, he said any type of situation like that and they would take the rug back immediately and refund our money. But the wool has just been like gold – I've easily cleaned up urine, vomit, food spills, you name it, and everything just beads on the surface and doesn't sink down in the fibers.

16:18 here - just wanted to mention I have one hand tufted rug and one hand hooked rug. I bought the hand tufted rug in November and it is still shedding. I bought the hand hooked rug in February and it's mostly done shedding.

I've had many hand tufted rugs and most are crap...west elm, crate and barrel, etc. my experience with a rug is you get what u pay for. My 2000 dollar rug from room and board has held up great, but 800 dollar rug from west elm shed forever.

Ugh, don't get hand tufted - it will shed for months and months and months. I got a hand hooked rug - about 8x10 for under $300. That's the most I was going to spend with a 2 year old running around the house. I figure I can upgrade later in life. Wool is great, though, as PP stated, it's easy to remove stains.

Where did you get yours from?

One from Overstock, very inexpensive and corresponding in quality. One from Ikea years ago, nice quality, thick and plush. One from Crate and Barrell. The first was less than $300, the other two were $6-800. These are all large area rugs.

Knotted not knitted. F'ing apple auto correct.

Hand tufted is crap. It's a cheap version of hand knotted - minus the hand knitting and plus smelly glue that will eventually crumble into powder. Google "hand tufted rug latex crumble."

Hand hooked is the same crap. Anytime you see a cotton backing, that means it's held together by glue.

Hand knotted wool rugs will last forever. Stains are super easy to remove thanks to wools natural stain repellent (lanolin).

The one I am considering is supposed to be hand-tufted and I am told they last forever. Will they withstand a toddler?
