We like Ikea's foam mattresses for both adults and kids.

Mattresses don't last forever. A used mattress will have molded to someone else's shape, will not be as supportive as a new one, and ew, gross.

We bought a natural latex foam mattress from Savvy Rest in Vienna.

We went with this and have been very happy with it for our 3-year old. Was much cheaper than other organic mattress options, and its frankly more comfortable than the one on our own bed.

We have all Ikea box springs and two mattresses and have had no problems. For twin beds we got the Naturepedic. But, we bought the top of line with Ikea...

Please do not buy an IKEA mattress. We had a horrible experience with one of their children's mattresses stinking for WEEKS after we bought it. Finally returned it but it was a hassle.

We are replacing it with the Beautyrest Beginnings mattress, which was more expensive, but not as much as Naturepedic. We are buying a twin, though, so it is cheaper. A lot of reviewers said it had no smell at all, it's low VOC, and doesn't use phthalates, formaldehyde, methylene chloride, CFCs, PBDEs, mercury, lead and heavy metals. It is "Certi-PUR US certified" for whatever that's worth.
