Subject: Scratching other people - 7 yr old
Cut his nails as short as possible. When he does this behavior, he needs to be isolated immediately - sent to his room for at least 20-30 minutes.
At age 7, you should be able to introduce a multi-level punishment system. First time he scratches in a week, 20 minutes in time out. Second time in a week, 20 minutes time out and no screen time for rest of day. Third time in a week, no screen time and rest of day in room.

Too old for this. This is toddler behavior. Also too old for time outs.
I would do more in the way of prevention. Establish a routine where he does self-nail care and keeps his nails very short. Make sure he does this a couple of times a week and keep a chart. Make him conscious of avoiding this behavior at all costs.

Subject: Scratching other people - 7 yr old
Our 7 year old DS has taken to scratching us or his brother if he's mad about something. It can be something minor, but if he isn't happy, he'll lash out. We've taken away screens as a consequence among other things (time outs, yelling occasionally - not proud). Anyone else encounter this? Most of the situations could've been prevented if he just used words, but scratching is the default reaction. Thanks for any advice.
