I had this in my previous house. I really hate vertical blinds and I didn't like the idea of fabric drapes in the kitchen. But, in the end I put up the fabric drapes (that open from one end), and they actually looked much nicer than I was expecting. I would totally do it again. There are so many options - satin, stripes, print. Consider it.

How about the woven wood ones?

Sliders from the breakfast area to back patio, faces south so they will take a beating in the summer. I loathe vertical blinds, DH loathes fabric drapes on sliders. Other good options? The current sliders were installed maybe 5-6 years agoin conjunction with replacement windows. They are in excellent shape.
Ideally, in 5 years or so, I would like to replace with french doors with the mini blinds sandwiched in the middle, but until then we need something liveable. Small kids and small dogs, if it makes a difference.
