We were in the exact same boat and decided to wait till age 26 months and are happier with a half day preschool three days a week.

If you don't mind a home based daycare, there is an opening in September at the one my 2 year old son is going to. I am getting laid off so I am going to stay home with him. His daycare is in Vienna, on Hull Road. Her name is Baruna Rana (703-847-1986). I highly recommend her.

Have you tried the YWCA Children's Center? They tend to have waiting lists but we got in last minute a couple of years ago when we needed a place and were in a similar situation to yours. Openings happen when people move. I don't know about the toddler room but it's worth a call.

where do you both work? I would advise expanding your search all along your commutes to work. Then use the DSS inspection site http://www.dss.virginia.gov/facility/search/cc.cgi and call every center that it practicable.
You are most likely to find space at a newly opened center. You can get a sense for how crowded the center is using the inspection reports.
