Sometimes jobs seem the same, but the position descriptions are actually in different job series. If this is the case, you cannot lateral in.

The only reason I could see this being necessary is if you are currently in the excepted service and it is a competitive service job.

Or there is a Collective Bargaining Agreement (Union Agreement) that states that position has to be competed.

Op here ok this might be it. Just annoyed cause lots of pp did it without applying.

Why make the exception for an attorney? I don't follow. Or are making the excepted service point from above?

Because your lack of competitive status in those options mean you have to compete for the first time. There are some good tips if that is you, out there.

That usually the case unless the job (OP's new position) is already posted.

I think HR is bullshitting you.

We have to go through USA Jobs for promotions, but if you're not making more money, should be simple to transfer boss's name. Is it a different job series?

Oh and if you apply and don't make the cert list, they will just have you reapply over again. I've seen it happen often. I feel bad for the poor schmucks who apply for that job and think they have a chance.

I want to move and I am in the competitive series. Almost exact same job, just different team.

Back to your current job, I suppose... OP - do you want to move?

I was offered to be reassigned to a different position in the same office at the same grade. HR told me a date was negotiated between my current manager and future manager. A week later HR tells me I have to apply via usa jobs for the posting. Has anybody had success with a reassignment without going through USA Jobs?
