Yes, you can install a backsplash above it. Lots of people do this and it is fine.
You can, but I think it would look a lot better not to. It should be easy enough to remove that strip and then put in a full backsplash. That will look more attractive and more updated.
Good to know! I didn't realize it could really be removed without affecting the countertops - that would be my preference.

How much less does it cost to install the 4" backsplash? How much less work is it?
I would have thought it was more expensive and more work since you are getting more granite and it has to be installed over the back of the counter. If the 4" part is not installed, they just stop at the wall.

We skipped it and now regret it. The very tight seal between the granite base and the 4" inch back splash keeps the whole thing sealed. We did it on part and not on the other part-- trend at the time. Now the seal behind the sink is cracking.

It's awful!! And then people have the 4" of countertop + tile to the cabinets and that's even worse! It's like laziness and then they continued a lazy thing.

Subject: 4" extension of countertop as backsplash
Does anyone have this in their kitchen instead of extending the tile backsplash all the way to the counters? My husband wants to do it so it's easier to clean and it seems like a bargain for the extra granite. I think I like the look of tile better...
