We do the same. I'm slowly getting rid of the lawn in the backyard of our rowhouse but in the meantime, the weedwhacker works just fine.

I usually hire by posting a note on craigslist, offering $15 an hour for someone to do a few hours yardwork. It usually takes three hours, and I pay them $60.

Alternatively, post on your local community email newsgroup if you have one.
