How is this different from Angie's List?


It's more local businesses specific to Washington Metro area and it seems business reviews are more specific. They offer a check list rating system for quality and satisfaction with all businesses. You can provide feedback; businesses can counter, you can provide your name and contact to help others. Membership per year is more like $28.00. I like it better, and have used it successfully.

Even my super cheap do-it-yourself dad did that, and I find it to be a big help - helps avert problems, and you'll be the first they come to in times of high demand.

It really may not be the compressor. It could be that the condensate line is blocked or that you need Freon. Someone just really has to come check it out. You could also have a leak, which might be more costly to repair. I'd call Argent Heating & Cooliing or Jiffy. I've had decent success with both. Also, get a yearly service plan with a company who will include 2x checks a year on your system. You'll get a discount on parts and service. Just call around and see who can come soonest. If they say something needs to be replaced, then make more phone calls for estimates.

It depends on the unit. If it is just an compressor, its a few hundred. Maintenance is not worth it yearly. Save the money for a new one as they don't last.

Our central AC is blasting out hot air, so I am assuming the compressor has died. We have done nothing -- nothing at all -- to service our HVAC since moving in in 2010, other than changing the filter on the furnace every 3-6 mos, and two duct cleanings.

--How much is this going to cost to fix? Any recommendations in NoVa?

--Really, what are we supposed to be doing to service our HVAC every year or so?
