If you think they'll use and appreciate it, then it's a great gift. I know what you mean about giving a single item like that as the sole gift, though. Can you make it into a basket of culinary items (gourmet spices, handwoven napkins, silly hot pads, etc)?

Gift certificate to Kennedy Center. We wou never have been able to afford tickets to a show there otherwise for many years!

For my sister I waited until her professional photos were given to her by her photographer and I got one framed. Printing the digital picture was maybe 40 and then I ordered a frame and matting online. Was about 150.

A nice blender, mixer, toaster oven, vacuum, and a few other practical things.

This isn't very expensive, but our instant-read thermometer has changed our cooking (for the better). We love it. It probably gets about as much use as any of our other gifts.

A coffee pot with a timer. Not only was it a great wedding gift, but it turned into a great baby gift too.

One of the best wedding gifts we received was a set of two nice metal trivets (some sort of swirly open pattern; artsy but classic and not too style-specific). We use them all the time.

(They were a gift from a very funny, very brilliant friend who died too early a death, so it's even more special to me that we can take them out every week and have an opportunity to be reminded of this friend.)

some things we have probably used the most (not all sound that exciting but all have been great gifts!): the Pyrex glass storage containers, a simple human dish rack, simple human step trash can (never knew I could love a trash can that much), some nice bath towels and sheets. I second the poster who said to give them stuff from their registry adding up to the amount you want to spend. do they have any items on the registry that are $50 or so and you could just get 2-3 of those moderately priced items? that's what I would do...

I am from a culture that does not use registries, so I didn't have one.

One person gave us a rocking knife and a beautiful small handmade rug which we use as a wall hanging. I treasure those more than anything else!

A pass to the national parks and an accompanying book.

best things we received: everyday dishes, wine glasses, KitchenAid Mixer (though I know that's out of your price range), some nice knives, some nice pots and pans. I'd just get them several/many items adding up to the amount you want to spend but I'd def use their registry because IMO, that is the stuff the couple really wants/could use

We received a full set of monogrammed glasses from things remembered. 4 white wine, 4 red whine, 4 tumblers and 4 beer glasses. We LOVE THEM! They were not expensive and were not on our registry but I am so happy to have them

my brother is getting married next month and I want to get them something nice but I'm also in school at the moment so I can't spend a huge amount of $$. I am thinking something around $150 would be what I'm comfortable with/would like to spend.

they have a registry but there are no gifts that are at the price point I want to spend. there are tons of really cheap things (like cooking utensils) and a few really expensive things.

anyway, as I'm deciding what to get them, I thought I'd ask for some opinions here--what were the best/most appreciated wedding gifts you received? (other than money or gift cards, neither of which I particularly want to give...I'd rather give something tangible)
