Switch to gas heat if you can, much more efficient and way cheaper in the long run.

Whatever you do, don't pretend your house is a colonial. It'll just look ridiculous.
Embrace the California ranch style and more mud century modern aesthetic, so popular on HGTV anyway. Also, look at young house love.com. Their first house is a ranch in Richmond and looked great when they were done.

Subject: how much to add a fancy porch to a ranch to some what disguise that its a crappy ranch
Dh and I are buying a house - I do not want to buy a ranch, but it fits our needs space wise and we would have left over money to work with for renovations. The ranch is listed at 295k and we think we could get it for around 270k. We are in an area of the country where houses and renovations(to some degree) are less expensive than DC, think Philadelphia. We want to do the following, how much do you think each would cost?
1) shingle the outside of the house all the way around, add shutters and a porch like this:

2) total redo of the 1970s kitchen, including taking our a wall (not lead bearing or electric) to open to the family room. Want to do new cabinets and soapstone countertops and mid-grade stainless appliances. Kitchen is a normal sized kitchen.
3) Add hardwood where there is currently laminate (about 1000 square feet) and stain where there is hardwood currently to match the new hardwood (about 600 square feet).
4) currently there is oil heat and no AC. We would like to switch to electric heat and install AC.
