Here's a quick review of Rec Pac so far. My 2 dd's are signed up for the last two weeks, so this week and next. So far, they are having fun. They play in the gym, go out on the playground, had water day and built a rocket. They also do arts and crafts. Today is carnival day with games and prizes, and tomorrow is movie day.

They are enjoying it and excited and happy to go each day. The calibre of the kids seems the same as usual. They seem organized and professional. The only negative was my younger dd thought she was going to summer school at first, but after the first day, she has been happy to attend. I have been very happy with the low cost! Win win. I wouldn't send my kids all 6 weeks I don't think but a week or two seems to be working out for us. Dd's are 7 and 9. They do separate the kids by age group.

I don't understand "calibre of the kids"? What does that phrase mean in this context?

rec pac is a low-cost way to give your child something to do outside of the house for a few weeks. The crafts/games/activities will be low cost. The calibre of kids in the group depends on which school you are going to. Rec pac works on a sliding fee scale, so there may be more kids who are "needy" (i.e. in need of some discipline) in some locations (depending on the SES of the neighborhood).

We've had positive and not so positive (but not terrible/bad) experiences. (i.e. gym was closed and it was 100 degrees outside but they still made the kids go outside and my child started to faint a few times; one director told me the county had shut off the money and it wasn't what it used to be; a class leader/teacher told me they have a bullying problem, etc.)

Rec Pac is largely..."you get what you pay for" kind of camp. It gets the kids out of the house, but don't expect them to learn any skills or take any field trips. It's worth doing once and then see if you like the value you are getting. It's socialization, games and arts/crafts.

OP, pp do you mind explaining more? I'm also wondering if they stick to the "themes" each week. Like if its "carnival week", is it really carnival themed, or not so much?

Wow, surprised they still have this. We went pretty much every year growing up. Never had a bad time there but it is definitely not a fancy camp so I guess in some locations it might not hold much cache. In Pimmit Hills/Falls Church (used to be at Timber Lane) I definitely remember a lot of kids growing up, way more than 20. The counsellors had trouble managing the behavior of a lot of older boys. But I don't remember this being a big problem, just kinda felt bad for the counsellors even as a kid. I'm sure times have changed, I'm just kind of tickled to know it still exists.

My neighbor's dd went last year and enjoyed it. My dd's are going to 2 weeks to be with neighbor's kid. I will let you know how they like it.

I'm debating sending my rising 1st grader just for fun but I'm wondering why the enrollment is so low (around 20 kids at our local school). Is there something I don't know?
