You got soft bamboo probably the caramelize kind. Also it depends on the company because the binder is what is most of the strength.

Have you looked at cork or marmoleum?

Marmoleum is durable but most buyers consider it cheap and a vinyl tile. Go with cork or bamboo,
both can be refinished

OP here- I will look into these as well. The bamboo we were looking at is the strand bamboo from Costco.

Thanks for the info everyone!

It can definitely be refinished if you have the solid http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/home-garden/how-to-refinish-bamboo-floors/2012/03/06/gIQAIhh89R_story.html

BTW, NEVER buy the carmelized/carbonized because it is very soft

We have it. It's held up well but we got the solid planks natural color. There are surface scratches but they are mostly in the poly so the you can use this https://www.bona.com/en-US/Home/United-States1/BonaSystem/Professional-Series-Floor-Care/Bona-Pro-Series-Hardwood-Floor-Refresher/

Down the road the solid planks can be rescreaned and lightly sanded to be refinished.

Had it in my last house and it was pretty beat up with scratches and gouges. Maybe the high end stuff is tougher? I'd never put it in after seeing how soft it was and how poorly it held up.

We have it in our bedroom and in the basement and it is really soft - it scratches is SOOOO easily, I wish the previous owners had picked something more durable. We, unfortunately, can't afford to replace it right now.

I feel all the hate for laminate floors but for my lifestyle they would actually work really well. I have two very large dogs and not a lot of money to spend but desperately need to replace the horrible 15 year old carpeting in my living room and den. It looks like I can get bamboo flooring for roughly the same cost as laminate, and it appears as easy to install. What is the concensus on bamboo floors- a deal breaker like laminate or great because it's a sustainable product?
