Nothing *has* to match, except the proportions.

Nothing could be more boring than matching, but my rule is no more than two finishes in a room. I'm a design junkie and everyone is mixing it up.

Not throughout a house. Different rooms or areas can be different. But areas that are visible from one another should coordinate. Not matchy-matchy, but not clashing colors or styles.

Just my opinion, but if your appliances are stainless steel, and your look is modern or European, your drawer pulls and door handles should be close in color. Brushed stainless, brushed nickel, etc.
If your look is more traditional, you could get away with oil rubbed bronze. But not a clashing color or anything shiny.

Mixing and matching different metals is popular these days (as long as they don't clash).
Also, It is fine if you have a modern bathroom even if the rest
Of the house is not modern as it is a separate space and you can close
the door. Have some fun decorating!

I don't think things have to match, but they do have to coordinate. For example, you can't have some super-modern fixtures and finishes and then a bunch of traditional fixtures in the same room (or in my opinion the same house). Things should go together, traditional, modern, or otherwise.

I'd like to see the same bronze color and something similar in style (not something ultra-modern, etc.), but I think it's perfectly okay that not every fixture on a floor come from the same "suite" of light fixtures.

If you bring this picture and a picture of your entryway and dining room to a lighting store, they can be very good at picking something that would work.

We are building and was wondering if the kitchen (Stainless Steel Appliances) needed matching drawer pulls and lighting pendants. And then if we chose chrome or brushed nickel in there, were we obligated to do the same finsih in the breakfast area and formal dining room and foyer and half bath. Then the upstairs...

I know it doesn' really matter, just don't want peole thinking I was crzy to do all mismatch in my new home.

We have a mix of chrome and ORB and I like the mix. Its easy to fix fixtures to any color with a can of spray paint.

OP here- was this just an obvious or dumb question? I saw someone on here complain about a listing because the lighting fixtures didn't match and that was one of the reasons the place was not selling? Is that really a thing? Like laminate flooring being a no???

Are lighting fixtures supposed to match through a house. For example if you have a bronze finish fixture in the front hallway, do you need same or similar in the connecting kitchen and dining room?? Do you have to use bronze finish in the half bath on that floor or is it okay to use brushed nickel or whatever for the other fixtures. This is a serious question because I know it jumps out at me if flooring is all mismatched throughout a floor and was wondering if there was anything similar for lighting and fixture.


If this was in the front hallway, what type of lighting would you use in a very small dining room nearby??
