i think ceiling mount can be enough light. you have to check the number of lightbulbs and wattage because they vary a lot. do you know how much wattage you have now?

m guess is your current light is too bright or it's too much white light and you might like a more yellow light.

what about something like the Ikea Fuga? it comes in different sizes.

also ikea has some decent under cabinet lighting that might help. the places that you really want to see will be bright. my contractor told me it's not a big deal to install this, but i haven't done it myself.

Thank you! I am just not sure if a single ceiling mount fixture will generate enough light - the fluorescent one is huge. Maybe track light then?

what about some kind of ceiling mount light. track light would also work i think. I'd have to see a picture.

but please do get rid of the large box fluorescent light

Very old, large fluorescent light box in our kitchen. Were thinking of replacing it with similar only smaller and modern one but not really a fan of fluorescent. What would be a good alternative? Track light? Seems like recessed is popular but not as simple as replacing a fixture. Kitchen is pretty dark. Thanks for advice!
