I grew up in Richmond and went there as a kid every year and loved it. It will be crowded, but not DC-area crowded. I would also go to Shockoe Slip and have dinner there, go to Carytown to see the shops, and go to Maymont and see the beautiful gardens.

VMFA is super nice with a varied collection. The restaurant in the museum is excellent - make a reservation though.

Do not do the zoo. It is not actually in Richmond.
VMFA, Science Museum, Carytown, Shockoe Slip, Church Hill, Maymont, see if they are doing anything in Brown's Island.

Another vote for Maymont, and do the house tour.

Carytown, Virginia Musuem of Fine Arts. You could check to see if any availability for whitewater rafting or paddleboarding. There are several fireworks shows, in the past Friday & Saturday night. check out Richmond.com or styleweekly.com

My bf and I are taking a weekend trip to Richmond during the Fourth of July weekend. Suggestions for fun things to do/see?
