Slight aside, but OP can I ask - was your son red-shirted? My DD is 12.5 and going into seventh grade and I think of her as one of the older kids of her grade.

His birthday is mid-September, so technically he should be going into 7th grade, yes. He is very small and so we had him wait a year before starting kindergarten (he missed the cutoff by only two weeks).

OP, and just to be clear - he is 11 now. Turns 12 in September. So he's the oldest of his friends, but they turn 12 in the months that follow (November, etc..) so he's not THAT much older than the rest of the kids in his class.

If you're not adverse to coming in to the city, how about the Spy Museum or the Crime and Punishment Museum and lunch/dinner at Shake Shack?

The Spy Museum is a little pricy, in my eyes, but Crime and Punishment is $18 online for kids 12 and under. And a quickie place like Shake Shack is fun and cheap.

Not the OP, it doesn't matter. My kid repeated K, then later diagnosed with LD. A kid could move states, move to this country, or just be older. WTF does birthday plans for a 12 year old have to do with when this kid started K.

Well, it has nothing to do with birthday plans. That's why I said that part about "aside".

Or the kid could just live in MD where the cut off is 9/1.

Yes, that's what I meant at just being older.

Not OP either but the cutoff in Montgomery County is September 1. So any kid who turns 12 in September or October will be starting 6th grade when almost 12. So no, likely not red shirted, but "naturally" one of the oldest in his grade.

Why not ask him what he wants to do?

Lazer tag is always popular with boys no matter what the age.

Videogame truck.

Sleepover with movies, video games and tons of food.

My son is starting 6th grade in September and turns 12. I'm looking for a good idea for a fun birthday night or day for him and 4-5 friends. We've done a movie, and will do that again unless we think of something else. I thought about something like King's Dominion, but it is so far away.

Thanks!
